Count Objects-Write Number. The Count Objects-Write Number probe is administered class-wide, in small groups, or individually by the teacher or assessor. The teacher follows standard instructions to guide students to correctly complete a sample item and then begins the probe. On the left side of the page are printed a number of circles ranging from 1-10 or 1-20 (depending on probe difficulty level). On the right side of the page is an empty box. Students are required to count the circles and then write the corresponding number in the box. Students complete as many problems as possible in one minute and the probe is scored as number correct per minute. Two forms of this probe are available. One contains numbers to 10 and the other contains numbers to 20. Assessors should select the one probe which most closely matches local or state instructional goals or standards. This assessment focuses on one of the most important early numeracy skills requiring students to demonstrate concepts of number sense by using one-to-one correspondence. Probe orders should include the assessment manual for administration and directions.
