The Beginning Sounds probe is administered class-wide, in small groups, or individually by the teacher or assessor. The assessor guides students to correctly complete a sample item and then proceeds to name a series of items. A picture representing each item or object is also present on the student and assessor forms. The objects sample the beginning word sounds from A to Z (26 items). Students are allowed 5 seconds to respond to each item by circling the correct letter from the four possible answer choices provided with each item. The response time permitted for each item was empirically derived and is important to adhere to during the assessment to ensure that meaningful data are obtained. This assessment addresses beginning letter sounds which is an element of phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness has been well established as a critical early literacy skill. Probe orders should include the assessment manual for administration and directions.
